Well, yes, but:

A final caveat is this: The negative correlation was statistically reliable, given the large sample size, but rather small in magnitude. The correlation between number of partners and relationship stability, for example, was -.17. What this means is that the stability of your current relationship, and your satisfaction with that relationship, is determined by many other variables, besides whether or not you’ve had a lot of prior partners. Many people of my age and generation have had numerous previous relationships before their current one, and yet have stayed in their current relationship for decades. Whether or not your current relationship will last has less to do with how wild your past was, and more to do with how pleasant, faithful, and accommodating you are in the future.

-0.17 is not exactly Earth-shattering when it comes to negative correlations, as the author notes. Just because this article reinforces a common redpill tenant doesn't mean we can overlook the fact it isn't exactly a glaring statistical homerun.

Far more interesting, I imagine, to see this dataset lined up against average age of each gender respondent. I imagine you'd see a flattening out to stability for women, regardless of prior partner count, around age 30.

I sense a student of statistics.

Yes and no. Can we say if it's even the greatest explanatory predictor? No idea; I haven't read the whole study. But the synopsis describes a result interesting precisely because it destroys modern PC concepts. That is, a slut is ceteris paribus a worse partner than a low-n partner. Whatever the strength of the partner count correlation, a methodologically sound M.L.R. sure trumps the empty words of free love advocates.

Speaking of free-love advocates (here I'm also talking about many of my fellow Red Pillers), take note of the interesting result from the article synopsis:

Gender was not significantly associated with the patterns in the model but age cohorts did have different patterns.

Without looking into the study, it seems that men who want to start families should also be careful about their sexual partner count.

TL;DR Don't fuck with abandon, future husbands and fathers.

[–]Staple_Stable 14 points15 points16 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That is, a slut is ceteris paribus a worse partner than a low-n partner.

Statistically worse, but the correlation is so small that it could be irrelevant in practice. At some point even though the relationship may be very real, it becomes more efficient to look for other stronger red flags.

Without looking into the study, it seems that men who want to start families should also be careful about their sexual partner count.

That implies causation though, which as you know, correlation doesn't.

Sure, in a vacuum, you'd choose the girl with lower partner count if you wanted to maximize stable relationships. But you never get a ceteris paribus choice in real life so the results of the study could more or less be irrelevant to practical red pill theory.

Declaring this a to blue pill statistic. It too readily builds false confidence.

It's easy and marginally reliable to look at n-count. But per this article, you've only accounted for 3% of your relationship stability. There's a whole host of other possible variables (and black swans) that will screw up your relationship if you aren't careful.

Red pill statistics = drawing no confidence from confidence intervals for linear regression.

[–]DanReggins 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

TL;DR Don't fuck with abandon, future husbands and fathers.

Damn! Guess I fucked that up.

[–]Glenbert 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So, a -0.17 correlation suggests that sluttiness negatively predicts less than 3% of the stability in your LTR.

So, take the n-count heuristic too seriously, and there's still a 97% chance you will get cuckholded by a former virgin.

Brothers, there really is no magical algorithm to ensure that the woman with whom you are in an LTR with remain devoted to and in love with you.

Just remain as attractive to all women as you possibly can. And when she cheats on you, be grateful that it happened sooner than later and that you stayed attractive to all women.

[–]real-boethius 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No that is not how it works. 0.172 is the percentage of variation explained after accounting for all the other variables.

It does not mean a virgin is 97% likely to have a a baby with someone other than the husband. On average only 10% of babies are fathered by someone other than the husband. Having a virgin wife is going to reduce that significantly.

[–]Glenbert 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No that is not how it works.

First, I know. I was hoping that my hyperbole in the second sentence would be more obvious that it was. At any rate, 97% of LTR instability remains unexplained by sluttiness.

My real point remains, work on yourself. There is NO IDEAL WOMAN, even if you've managed to find yourself a "virgin" wife.

Personality and compatibility: A prospective analysis of marital stability and marital satisfaction. By Kelly, E. Lowell; Conley, James J. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol 52(1), Jan 1987, 27-40.

Abstract

The antecedents of marital stability (divorce or remaining married) and marital satisfaction (within the group that remains married) were investigated with a panel of 300 White couples who were followed from their engagements in the 1930's until 1980. 22 of the couples broke their engagements; of the 278 couples who married, 50 got divorced between 1935 and 1980. Personality characteristics (measured by acquaintance ratings made in the 1930's) were important predictors of both marital stability and marital satisfaction. The 3 aspects of personality most strongly related to marital outcome were the neuroticism of the husband, the neuroticism of the wife, and the impulse control of the husband. The remaining variance was accounted for by attitudinal, social-environment, and sexual history variables. (29 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

So neuroticism in the wife is more important, as well as neuroticism in the husband, and poor impulse control in the husband.

Still you would be a fool to ignore something that accounts for ~4% of all divorces.

[–]1FloranHunter 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So marriage is less stable with more neuroticism? Shit.

[–]Psionx0 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

-0.17 is barely a correlation at all. It is far more likely that there is no correlation and this result is here because of confounds that were not accounted for.

[–]real-boethius -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In social matters it is rare to find very strong correlations. 17% is pretty good.

Also worth noting that this is after accounting for other variables such as neuroticism in the wife - which is likely to be also associated with sluttishness.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A -0.17 correlation does not represent 17% shared variance. It represents -0.17 squared, or roughly 3% shared variance in a negative direction.

[–]trudatness 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

When women are young, beautiful and used to everyone kissing their ass, they feel invincible and think life will always be that way. They out earn men, they dictate how their relationships work, they are free to do pretty much whatever they like.

Then something happens.

Men start to catch up - and by 30 years old by and large men begin to start taking the upper hand. They are less inclined to bend to will of women to get what they want. The pool of successful and available men shrinks. The pool of women in need of LTRs stays the same (or increases because of divorce). Women discover their workplace advantage evaporates. It becomes a buyers market for men.

Then the worm starts to turn. That sassy empowered arrogance dissipates into the ether once they discover succeeding in the next level of adulthood is hard and their chances of success look increasing less promising. All of a sudden, a whole mess of fish are looking for bicycles. In that panic, some hasty decisions are made - and many of them are marriages doomed to failure.

So many of these liberated women who had active single sex lives settle for a guy they believe would bring them stability. The beta bux male. These marriages are high risk because they are not based on love, but on selfishness. Often the men they marry have difficulty keeping their attraction over the long haul. Bad things are bound to happen - and the person who pays the biggest price is the man.

So women who lead this kind of life don't ever really love anyone but themselves over the course of their lives. Whether or not they are capable is irrelevant - they just don't - and men take notice.

I've read quite a bit of blue pill trolls talking about being in LTRs with guys they love and respect. Unwittingly, they describe red pill style LTRs. Seems like bpers completely forget about the contingent of guys who want LTRs, but come to TRP to learn how to be smart about it. The guys they describe in their lives are strong, intelligent and also kind. They respect their men - and are happy to have them. They don't view their SOs as weak, or inept or else they wouldn't want to be with them.

Seems irony is abound. TRP says being masculine and higher status SMV goes a long way towards keeping an LTR stable. It gets proven in the comments of blue pill every day.

Okay, so, you're free to believe whatever you like about sluts and LTRs and junk and there may be studies to support that sluts make for bad LTRs... but at least -read- the fuckin article:

But because these findings are correlational, there are numerous other possibilities. Whenever researchers see that two variables covary, they begin to search for possible third variables that might be (independently) causing both.

The negative correlation was statistically reliable, given the large sample size, but rather small in magnitude. The correlation between number of partners and relationship stability, for example, was -.17.

http://faculty.quinnipiac.edu/libarts/polsci/statistics.html, on interpreting correlation:

-.01 to -.19 No or negligible relationship

If you're going to use science to "prove" anything, at least read what you're citing.

First, I find this post valuable because science is always preferable to conjecture, as much as we may be enamored with our observations.

What I would be particularly interested in is the difference in the correlation (between # of partners and less relationship satisfaction) between men and women. One of the key conjectures of red pill has been that a high volume of sex outside a stable relationship has a greater negative effect on women, reducing their ability to pair bond. I've seen exactly one study which revealed its findings along these lines but published no data.

If THAT finding was revealed with data (and it may be in this study once the details are pored through), that would be significant step forward for red pill. Hard proof that the cock carousel has long-term consequences for women.

Obviously when it comes to selecting a wife, a virgin bride/girlfriend is the ideal, but what, in the opinion of the frequent posters here, is the threshold for the point at which a woman becomes unfit to be marriage material?

What is the point at which she can be said to be riding the carousel if it is not at the point of simply not being a virgin?

What mitigating factors come into play that are simply not hamstering or rationalizing (and according to a lot of RP men, any notion of a woman considering a prior sexual encounter or relationship as a "mistake" IS just an exercise in hamstering - what are your thoughts on this?)

If such a woman has only one (or perhaps, at most, two) non-marital sexual partners, what are the circumstances under which one can plausibly admit that this is not necessarily indicative of problems down the line?

And even though it is not disputed that, statistically speaking, any prior sexual partners correlates with a higher rate of marital disruption, how likely is it and under what circumstances is it possible (in terms of attitude and context) that a woman with a relatively low sexual partner count will be able to bond with her husband in much the same way as a virgin would?

[–]SgtBrutalisk 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Making generalizations is a thankless task. That being said, if you're just observant, you can clearly see woman's reactions in everyday life and draw your conclusions about her character from that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think this is the most sensible approach. There are all sorts of personality characteristics that can compel bad behavior. Some of them are correctable. Some are probably not (or are beyond the skill of any boyfriend or husband).

[–]SgtBrutalisk 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

[–]MrDog123 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So what sort of observations do you believe to be pertinent?

[–]SgtBrutalisk 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I apologize for my belated response, I was being railed in r/askwomen because I asked "would you buy a sandwich that was tasted by 20 people before you?".

So what sort of observations do you believe to be pertinent?

It's a very tricky question and there are no shortcuts to answering it. Everything is useful, just try to suppress the knee-jerk reaction, be observant and you will eventually get Sherlock Holms-like attention to detail. At that point, slightly frowned face, a tiny tick or a change of tone will speak volumes to you. You will literally be able to read people and see if they have problems with their father, mother, money, etc.

At least, that's my experience.

[–]toysjoe -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So let me get this straight...people who have a lot of casual, carefree, no-strings-attached sex are "more likely to see sexual intercourse as a marker of long-term commitment."

Am I the only one to whom that makes no sense at all?

[–]vaker 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You've misunderstood what's written:

Those restrained people might also be less likely to be hooked on the thrill of initial sexual encounters, and more likely to see sexual intercourse as a marker of long-term commitment.
