Let me start off by saying...I don't know how I feel about marriage. I've always thought it had negative connotations towards it and this feeling started when I was a young teenager. I've never wanted to put myself in a situation where I have felt trapped and can't get out. I know there is always divorce but that is something I really don't want to go through. I've always liked the idea of being able to leave whenever I want and if I were to be with someone long term, I would be with them out of love and not because I signed some piece of paper years ago and feel the need to abide by it.

That being said..... I've been with my boyfriend for 8.5 years. We live a happy, blissful life with lots of love and romance. Currently in the process of saving up for a house and have lived together (renting) for 6 years. I've always felt we had the kind of love that you see in movies and I've always considered him to be a HVM. This guy has done countless things for me, more than I've heard any other bf/husbands do for their girlfriends/wives. This guy is the one who I actually want to spend the rest of my life with. Sappy, I know.

So this leads me to this.....the marriage talk.....it's like this elephant in the room. When we first started dating, we briefly talked about it. We fantasized about a small wedding on a boat. From my understanding, we both felt the same way about marriage (negative connotations/not wanting divorce, not necessary etc) but we agreed if we were to ever get marred, it would be to each other, and I genuinely felt he meant that. I always thought down the road (many, many years later) this might be something to look forward to.

So about half way into our relationship, ppl would often ask us (in a social setting) if we ever planned to get married. This was around the time a lot of our closest friends were getting married. So in response, my bf exclaims "no never!" and scowls his face. Suddenly I felt this stab in my heart. Up until this point, we had never really made that decision, whether it was a heck yes or a heck no to marriage. I didn't even really know the answer to the question yet and here he was proclaiming it to everyone that is was a big fat NO. These social situations continued on for quite some time with the same response from him.

One day after attending a wedding, same question asked by curious friends, same response, I finally brought it up. He became upset with me. Said he didn't understand why I was so upset because he thought I didn't want to get married. Claimed he never remembered our talks and made it seem like I was being unreasonable. I said I had text messages and emails to prove we talked about it and he said they didn't exist. He was drunk, mind you from was wedding, but this conversation continued on to the next day. I found this behavior upsetting. We never really solved it. It has been brought up a few other times since then. With no real concrete yes or no. He just says "I don't want a wedding" and I say "I don't want one either, it will be just us". And then it never really evolves from there.

So.... I can't deny I sometimes feel like the "forever girlfriend". I don't know why I feel this quiet growing resentment towards him for never having an adult conversation about it. I don't really want marriage but yet I feel angry that I haven't even been acknowledged for something like that. Thoughts ladies?

Edit: I also feel like I have painted this guy in a bad light. He's gone above and beyond for me. Has all the qualities of a HVM but this one thing is driving me crazy. I am not a "pick me" person and have vetted thoroughly.
