His mom is not the same religion as he and his father are, and I know his two previous serious girlfriends were of the same faith/ethnicity as his mother. The books have been more about the political ideology we share and how it's been influenced by/interacted with his faith.
We do have sex despite it being against his religion. He's told me he had a lot of guilt around sex with his first girlfriend and has since gone to therapy/made peace with it. His argument is basically that dating in 2021 involves sex, and so long as we're doing it in service of intimacy/love, it fits the spirit of his faith close enough, if not the law of it. There's one part of religious services that he's since stopped partaking in, though, because he's been violating the prohibition.
His religiosity is hard to put a finger on; he's very critical of many of the formal institutions of his faith and often seems motivated more by an intellectual/aesthetic/political commitment than a spiritual one. At the same time, though, he nearly became a monk a few years ago.
I don't think engagement would necessarily be conditioned, I get the sense that he would be down if I had my own different faith, but that not having a faith at all is what's hard for him. As for why, most charitably: I've expressed interest, he thinks it would be legitimately beneficial for me like it's been for him, he thinks it's the best way forward wrt our political commitments, he wants us to be on the same page about what's ethical if we're married/coparenting; least charitably: this is his version of when my exes have made me watch a bunch of Taiwanese arthouse films or listen to hours of shoegaze but this time my eternal soul is on the line, he wants to impress his friends/family, he's concerned about the big white wedding (I think I'd have to be formally part of the faith in order for us to get married in the church). In reality, probably a mix of all of the above, though I would wager that he's at least more consciously aware of the more charitable reasons.

I believe in the tenets and really like the rituals/services, I'm not sure if I believe in the God though
