However, to make her feel better, I think what she means is a romantic dinner- vs. takeout at the BK lounge and calling it a date.

Better yet, do an actual DATE- an action packed excursion where you lead your GF through various shared activities- aka a "date." So not just dinner- not EVEN dinner. A shared activity- and it does NOT have to even cost money! How about a walk in the park and sharing an ice cream cone. Or bike riding down that mountain. You park your car at the top and her car at the bottom. Canoeing down the river. A moonlight sail. A road trip to.....

Just any change in the norm could be phrased as a date.

Sometimes I'll just tell my wife (like what you said) "don't cook and dress to impress."

What she is saying is you are boring, and she wants excitement. Excitement does not mean working from her frame, trying to "guess" what her hamster means by date. If you do that, she will just change her mind anyway. You can't fulfill that.

Instead, alpha up, become more exciting. From that, you will do fun stuff because you want, and she will be excited to be part of it. Read MMSLP, it explains this idea of becoming more exciting.

there is some utterly shitty blue pill advice in here. the idea of going out of your way to appease a woman because she expects it is so pathetic. you do that, you fail - it's so tryhard.

my wife thinks every thing that we do is romantic. it doesn't matter if we're just going for a walk, going out for dinner, or spending a night at a hotel for shits and giggles. my life is a constant romantic date in her mind. in mine, i'm just going about doing things as i want and enjoying the shit out of it.

I think a key thing for a "date" is that it's something out of your normal routine. If you always go to dinner on Wednesday night, it's not really a date, unless you step up the caliber of restaurant, etc.

If she's just tagging along to events and activities you ordinarily do, that's not really a "date."

The key in all of this is she needs to feel it's a special activity, something you specifically planned to do with her.

Doesn't mean you can't have a standing date night every week, but if you don't mix it up it will stop feeling like a date to her.

I've been upping my "date night" game recently. First thing was to establish the meme of "date night". After we got a babysitter two or three times, I started calling it a "date night". She likes that, plus, giving it a name makes it feel like it's part of some bigger picture, which in years to come, and in hindsight, I will look back on it and say it was, but for now, I'm winging it.

Things I've learned :

have a plan, with enough details to keep it new and interesting, and with enough contingency to handle unexpected things (babysitter late, babysitter cancels, blah blah)
tell her you have a plan. But don't tell her the plan. Just give her logistical information. (be ready for 8pm, I'm wearing X shirt and y pants, that should let her figure out what to wear)
change it up each time. You might find that you like a place and return a few times. This is risky, because the novelty wears off quick. Add new elements (pre drinks somewhere new for example)
she wants to feel like you went to huge effort. She'll shit test you a bit about this. Recently, she tried to invite another couple to a date night I was planning. I STFU in front of the other couple. They got the message and politely declined her invitation, and later, when she brought it up, I said "date night usually ends in sex, so don't go inviting others to date night unless you are inviting them for the whole thing", in a cocky playful way.
try not to make it too "regular". For us, Friday nights are potentially date nights, but I often skip one without explanation (but mindfully, not dizzy forgetfulness). Keep it special.
most important : curb your alcohol intake! Lead by example.

Use the word "date"
Do something that you couldn't do with a friend (male or female) without them getting a weird vibe. For example, could you ask your buddy "for drinks someplace quiet where we could get to know each other"? Probably not.

Personally, I found "a drink" and the first few dates that cost less than $20 to be ideal at getting rid of women who are not interested in you. The date is really about sitting and talking and getting to know each other without any other distractions.

That means no movies, dinners, festivals, parties, clubs, wine tasting, or anything else where the venue is more attractive than you.
