I would say humiliation with amused mastery: laugh and say that they remind you of your younger nephew. Watch as he regrets that shit as women in the group see him as a literal toddler. All the other replies in the thread are kinda cucky.

If they try to return the hat, say that they can keep playing with it and give them a pat on the head. That's gonna hurt 5x more than kicking him in the nuts.

Amused mastery/ignoring them. You have nothing to gain by passing a mans test (unless you're gay?) Guys will do this posturing type stuff in front of women when they are insecure, and fortunately women don't like insecure men. So by holding frame you'll definitely be seen as an upgrade to them, and should act accordingly.

I’m not a “kick his ass” type of guy— this happened to me in a crowded pub when I taught in Ireland. I just really like my hats, and I don’t need some drunk fuck taking one of them. Dude backed off pretty quick.

Try and make them feel less unique and special when they do that. “ Oh the bouncer did that too on the way in, it looked a bit better on him.” “ Yea you can hold onto that buddy looks like you need it more than me.” Just don’t give them an emotional response.

I put a bored face on, stare them straight in the eyes and say "what are you doing" kinda shaking my head a little like they a dumb ass.

They're expecting some sort of response from you and whoever else, when what they're doing is dumb and boring so let them know you and others think that. And then ignore and focus on the rest of the group and do what you came to do so attention is immediately drawn to what you saying and not the hat guy.
