First thing's first: yes, plates break, but you broke this one prematurely.

Your best plate caught feels (something you should be ready for given the amount of time that has passed) and your response was to be harsh for no reason. She's not dumb - she knows you're not dating and that you're probably seeing other girls. She can tell because you aren't taking her out on dates or spending that much time together. You didn't need to be so overt. All you had to say was "I know," "I love me too" or something similar and keep it moving. The point is to not reject her feelings in such a blunt manner and make her think she's wrong for being attracted to you. Had you handled it differently and treated it as something you hear all the time, you could have kept her around for longer and possibly had an amicable parting (because you'll both graduate and not because you were a dick about it).

Learn from this to extend future plates' shelf lives.

Then changed the subject and kept on going.

What did I do wrong? I used the 10 day rule, no dates, never indicated wanting to be more. Why is she testing me now after being such a solid plate? Soft next?

Because it's how she feels. It's not really a test.... but you're right to be wary.... female love confers little benefit on the male, male love seems to require the sacrifice of one's life to the female.

This isn't a dealbreaker though, so long as she knows the score (you see other women) and doesn't expect too much back. Generally you want to put off saying it back as long as you can (if ever). And avoid slipping into BF or providership behaviours that will lead her to feel entitled and then resentful.

Basically this is something you manage rather than dumping her over, especially if you like her and she's otherwise non-crazy.

Nothing had to change about the situation. You just had to handle her saying that in a much better way.

She's simply expressing feelz. Read up on 'the talk', and how to handle the situation. You kind of went nuclear, made her feel bad for expressing herself, and shot yourself in the ass.

The next step is normally handling 'the talk' in a way that you give up no commitment, dangle the carrot, and set it up so she further proves herself to you.

7 month plate sent me a long message on how much she loves and is in love with me the other day. I just told her I know I love me too and how cute she was. And her reply was something like “omggg stop making me smile” chicks are weird dude.
