You gave her the lead, this lowers your value pretty hard. It's like you thought you were masculine (alpha in the jargon) enough to play some cuteness (beta) card and it failed.

There are far better ways to say that but the real gold is not to say that. lol

Working is a reasonable excuse. Her seeing someone else is also a reasonable excuse.

Those two things were not in your control, so don't sweat it too much; where you did go wrong however is asking her to pick a date. You need to lead, and you need to not seem needy. If you think a girl is interested in you and you ask her out, and she replies she can't because "x" reason, just reply "no problem," and then say nothing else. If she is interested she would then reply "I am free on x day though." If she never answers back after, then you move on. Put yourself in her shoes, if some low value girl asked you out, how would you put it in a polite way that means no?

Think of it like the dentist.

The dentist will send you birthday cards and reminders for teeth cleaning. You most likely ignore them. Women are the same way. Don't text them frequently. Just once in a while like every other week or longer. They'll usually come around.
