You're correct in that you shouldn't let work get in the way of school. If you don't need the money, why work? If you do need the money, then no choice. Keep in mind, tuition and housing may be paid for, but who is going to pay for the beers at the bar?

Also, I would recommend getting a job in your field. Internship or paid part time. If you don't need the money, you can be more selective, but working at a computer repair store, at a development shop, or robotic lab, whatever is close to your focus, IS education that will be helpful in the real world.

I think you would be much better off getting as much as you can out of your experience at MIT than getting some spending cash. Take that time to invest in some extra projects, get to know some of your professors more. Get involved in clubs etc. You will never have another opportunity to spend 4 years as a full time under grad student. I suggest you read the book "Where you go is not who you are."

You're a lucky SOB who no doubt has worked his ass off to get into MIT. BUT your journey is just beginning and it is not time to slack off. Get as much as you can out of the time there and continue to work your ass off and it will pay off for you for the rest of your life!

This question doesn’t really make any sense to me, although you’re a very smart guy. If you have no other way of obtaining money then get a part time job, even if it’s at school. I’ve made most of my money (this year) as a student worker at my school, in the financial aid office.

Your priorities will decide if you will work or not. If education truly is your priority don't work; to get the best grades. Sacrifice will be that you won't be fucking alot. Once you start to get that money you will see your friends flock back in to hang out. Girls will be easier and it'd be harder not to work.

You absolutely focus 100% of your energy on succeeding at college, especially because you're at a top school. Borrow and leverage every dollar you can, and your lifetime NPV will be dramatically higher. You have ONE SHOT to knock this out of the park. Do it right.

Any job you could get will simply take time away from your studies. Getting straight As and getting involved in EVERYTHING IS YOUR FUCKING FULL TIME JOB NOW.
