Hi this is a bit of an unusual question..

Around my friend circle I'm a talker- I feel a bit smarter than others in certain areas so I tend to 'correct' my peers.

When I talk with someone older (20+years) it might be that we have nothing in common, or my confidence, but I don't tend to talk much and basically I don't feel like myself! I tend to be overly polite/nice to these whereas the real me is a bit cocky/critical.

Recently I was talking to my aunt's friend. She was talking to me and another friend of mine (same age). It's the usual how have you been, how's life, etc. I didn't really talk, just smiled and listened. She made a comment that implied I wasn't too bright, and my friend had to come to my defense that I was actually not an idiot.

She apologized, saying she was joking. I just ignored it.

But I feel this is an issue! Does anyone else have this issue? It's especially bad during 'sit down' talks (ex: over lunch).

TL;DR - I want to be myself, but I'm not as engaged (tend to listen, less dialogue) when talking to those older, causing a bad first impression.
