Personally the metric I gauge myself by is Stoicism in face of adversity. I will never allow my reaction to be dictated by circumstance. I choose my response.

It boils down to two things IMO.

Integrity. Does a man do the right thing when no one's around to watch him in action. Is he a man of his word or is he just putting on a facade to impress others?
How a man handles himself in the face of adversity. Does he panic and let his emotions get the best of him or does he logically navigate through the situation with poise and resolve?

Emotional intelligence has got to be a big requirement. As others have said, this also relates to how a man handled adversity. Back in the day, when your village was being invaded were you the man screaming frantically running around? Or were you the one who thought logically under pressure and grabbed fucking spears and rallied your troops?

Think this could go in many ways, but to me the men I’ve seen encounter difficult situations and not folding are “strong”. But also the men who have folded in difficult situations but come back stronger & no bitterness shows “strong” traits.

Standing up for oneself and the right thing. Being positive, respectful. Being mentally strong. Not being affected by the actions and words of others (positive nor negative). Being free from the chains we put on ourselves. Responsible and in control of one's actions. Disciplined and hard working. Having humility, and being powerful and strong itself. I think specific to your question what makes a man strong is strength. Powering through whatever comes his way.
