These are the gateways:

They flirt at you for validation, you flirt back, they feel validated and STOP the game. You insist, and upon failure, you seek to get closer as a friend. You'll be friendzoned;
They vent about something and you hear, comprehend, support and give her time, give her endless comfort. You'll be friendzoned;

Making jokes and making them laugh by no means sends you to the friendzone. As a rule of thumb attractive men aren't friendzoned. The women won't try to do it because they know they'll get friendzoned as well, but if a friend of yours starts venting too much, CUT HER OFF and change subjects to something fun, or rather, activities.

"Try hards", those guys that hit on her and upon failure try to befriend her, aren't friendzoned. They're creeps.

There is a difference between being funny & Charming and funny & creepy. In the end though, it all boils down to whether the girl is attracted to you. I used to be the fat, funny friend. Now I'm the in-shape, guy she fucks on the weekend who is "sooooo hilarious." Being funny can add a shit ton of value, but only if you have already established a baseline of value with the girl already. You must be attractive. That's the biggest thing.

I've made people laugh till they cried who wanted to fuck me. I have done the same with women who didn't have those feelings.

There is really no net loss in being "too funny". That girl wil introduce you to her friends like this, "Oh, you have to meet my friend BreathofCuck, he's the funniest guy I know!" INSTANT INTEREST AND VALIDATION.

Work with what you have. If you only want to fuck her, start touching her when you make her laugh and escalate. If she is REALLY not into it, she will stop laughing and push your hands away. Then soft next.

If you are being spontaneously and genuinely funny in the natural flow of a conversation or interaction, no problem.

If you are performing comedy routines for women to impress them, big problem. They will sense that you are trying too hard to impress them and dry up as a result.

I think this is how you can tell the difference. If the thought enters your mind, "I will do [insert action] to impress her", then don't do it.

You should only keep people in your life who bring you value. Women, men, even relatives should all have positive value. If she laughs at your jokes but is fun to be around, doesn't sucker you into being her orbiter she may provide value even if she isn't on your ladder to Fuck or you hers.

If you are being funny as a way to Fuck her be wary of the covert contract; thinking if I do x, she'll Fuck me. Be clear with your intentions upfront.

The best answer I have for you OP, and it's not really answering your question, but a simple truth I've noticed posted throughout the years here on TRP - why are male comedians better than female comedians??

Good Comedy, in the end, is about dominance.

If you're worried about being too funny or trying too hard, that's not creating comedy, or being funny, from a frame of dominance. There's many different humor types out there, but the polar opposite and worst is the self-deprecating (beta) kind.

The more physically and/or socially powerful you are, the funnier you are, the more women will find you funny with less effort. It's all about dominance.

The point is when you start being consciously aware of it or wondering if it's making you unattractive. If you're 110% into having your fun, this thought never enters the equation/your frame. It's funny because you say it is, with your body language, vibe, and passion.

Depends on the type of humour, and why you're doing it.

I'm told I'm pretty fucking funny, and it doesn't limit my chances. Why? Because it's the right kind of funny and I do it to entertain myself and have fun, it's somewhat edgy and definitely alienates some people (people I want filtered out, this is a handy timesaver).

Your homework is to be not at all funny in a social group. Learn to cope in other ways. Then bring the funny back later.

When you are both laughing that is an emotional high point. What you do next says a lot about what kind of man you are.

On such high points, you should consider leading or leaving. Leading can anything like:

Continue the conversation.
Physically moving her somewhere / to dance / etc.
Ask a personal question. Maybe one that leads to date ideas.
Close. Set up a date or suggest to leave the venue.

A lot of it depends on body language, rapport, and your calibration.

Leaving is also powerful because it shows you're just not attached, and have other options. Especially good early in a night. If your attention shifts, just let it. You can always re-open and it will be on a high note.

Both options are better than letting the emotional high point "fizzle".
