Just tell him sometimes, there's nothing you can do. She might have fun with the guy but that doesn't necessarily translate to her fucking him. It's VERY easy for a guy to confuse a girl just having a great time with her showing IOIs.
So chalk it up for what it is. Move on.

She's probably just going through some shit that's making her feel down, unwanted, tired, busy, stressed, whatever. Dealing with a guy takes energy that she's just not able to put in right now. Maybe if you're friend was fucking Ryan Gosling it'd be different, but he's not.

It's likely the exact wording of his messages, where the problem arose. I mean, he must've said something really cringe worthy. He should've been more bold in person, setting up the date at the high point of their interactions.

Yikes. When I read that, it exudes beta. "Wanna go out tomorrow?" Yuck. No Alpha asks for permission. If he is awesome, he'll just be doing awesome things and invite her along. Especially if she is in an open relationship. She is definitely looking for a take charge kinda guy.
He needs to get an IDGAF mentality when texting. Even texting her that day means (to her) that he has very few other options.
Girls want to compete for a high value man, and it seems like he just didn't display that to her.
