Background:

I am 22, female, just graduating and leaving the town I've been studying for the past 4 years. I met a man in April at an event organised by my university. He's, 37 and also studying here. We didn't exchange contacts first time around but I met him again at an event organised by our only common friend a month later. He walked me home that night (went way out of his way, geographically speaking) and asked me for my number. I texted him a few days later and he said he's busy writing his dissertation and could only meet up in two weeks time. Never heard from him again until.. a week ago. I ran into him in the supermarket. He asked me extensive questions about what I'm doing next and offered to carry my shopping as it was quite heavy. We said goodbye and about 30 secs later after I thought I've waved him for the last time he came back to me asking for my number again. Said his phone broke and he wanted to have my number again. An hour later I got a text from him asking whether I'm on Whatsapp. A relatively playful exchange of lines for about less than an hour.

Situation:

I asked this man when we are hanging out the day after I ran into him and he suggested Friday/weekend as he'd be out of town and only coming back Friday. Friday passed, weekend passed. I haven't heard from him at all.

Time's ticking away as I'm leaving town for good on Saturday this week and I really wanted to see him. Why do men flake in situations like this? Why would he bother asking for my number and texting me, agreeing to meet up only to disappear a few days after? I am generally aware that if a guy is interested he'd pursue. Especially if he's not 16 any more. Not too sure about this one though.

Question:

Should I be following up with him even though he hasn't said anything ever since we agreed to meet last week. He's the one that was away and it was me who sent the last message via text so you'd imagine he'd be the one to contact me. Nothing still. Would it be too pushy/desperate if I wrote to him again? If I do text him again, what should I be saying more or less?
