In the past, I was terrible at making eye contact. I avoided it at all costs. Recently though, I've been making an effort to maintain eye contact.

I think I've been getting better. But, I had an interaction today that's left me wondering about some things. I was in a job interview, and I was making eye contact with the woman interviewing me. When we started talking, she was making strong eye contact. But, after a short period, she seemed to become uncomfortable. She began looking away, taking only brief glances at my eyes. Overall, she seemed embarrassed.

This has left me wondering if it's possible that I was looking in her eyes too much. Is that a possibility? Can making too much eye contact be seen as weird?

I also wonder if maybe I betrayed a certain level of discomfort with the eye contact. I did occasionally look away, and I suppose it's possible that some of my remaining discomfort with this whole eye contact thing may have shown in my face. Sometimes it seems as though a moments hesitation over eye contact can cause the other person to question themselves, and thus ruin a conversation. But then again, perhaps I'm over analyzing what happened.

What do people here think? Is there such a thing as too much eye contact? Can the eye contact dynamic be be thrown into disarray by hesitation in your eyes and the occasional glance away?
