Yeah, that's what it's mostly like. The last time I hit on a girl in a coffeeshop- a couple weeks ago- she had headphones on, I was sitting kitty-corner to her, and I went to go smoke a cig so as I stood up I looked over at her, she looked at me (took headphones off), and I told her she better watch my seat. She laughed, I went out to smoke, then when I came back in I sat down at the table with her. We chatted for about a half hour. I didn't get her number but I'm sure I could've. It sort of depends on where you go (this was a rich neighborhood), but I think it's more dependent on the individual girls. I met other girls at the same spot who were a lot different.

Edit: I want to make this clear- this is what I do in most day game situations. If you don't have an obvious opening to talk, create the opportunity. Don't be afraid to interrupt whatever the girl's doing. I also highly recommend volunteer work, though it might be different for you if you're older- either way, it can give you an easy opportunity to talk to younger girls without much "pressure."

That's funny because I had exactly 4 best friends who would go around with me to do it. They would come with me around the dorms and the quad/caf areas, and we'd find groups of girls. None of those guys could do it alone, so when they were off doing something else, I would go do it alone. Most of our dorm parties had about a 2:1 ratio of girls to guys, and our frat parties often had fuckin crazy ratios (I prefer the ratio to be more normal though- in my experience, more girls just means more cockblocks and awkwardness sometimes).

I would do basically what you said though- approach random girls who look hot enough, say hi, tease her about some shit and figure out her logistics (where she's from and shit), then just tell her about the awesome party. Usually I'd make it clear that I didn't care if she showed up or not, so naturally she'd show up.
