Maybe it's because I'm older (early 30's), but I don't friend women I'm interested in. I'll tell them straight up: I don't friend dates, that I only have about 20 facebook friends, and they're all close friends in real life.

It works really well for me. I maintain a bit of aloofness, and it clearly reminds them where they stand (not a girlfriend).
