Having character is another way of saying there are many sides to a person.
Playing a character is like acting but then it's another way of advancing who you really are, so long as you advance who you really are.

Honestly you're a lil bit right. That's why called seduction the game. If you know how to play the game you gonna be more successful at it, as easy as it sounds but it's usually not looks like what you think. It's for me it's about knowing the girl better than she knows herself. If she's a more conservative type of girls I show her my more mature, emotional side and how stable I am, if she's more a party girls type I show her a let things happen naturally and don't take things too seriously side. It's not about playing something who you're not. For example if you're go the the gym or go to school or go to a family dinner, you're behave differently in those circumstances but you don't fake anything, you just show a different side of you. Kinda same thing with girls. If you assume what is she like or get to know it overtime you can be that guy who she can relate the most so you can be basically her type without knowing rationality what her type is.

Do I think my boyfriend treats everyone the way he treats me? God, I hope not. I'd have to repeatedly push his face into a blue-berry pie if he did. But this isn't a character. It's who he is when he's with his best girl who knows him in ways others don't. And he peacocks a little more when we're around others partially because he doesn't want to share the attention I give and partially to "defend his territory". But also, yeah, I see him being a little different when we're around others. That's because he's around others. It isn't romantic one on one time. Who we are has to shift to fit the current situation. That isn't a character, it's being a mature adult.
Imagine if he was all lovey dovey and slapping my ass while we're teaching a class for children together. It would be so inappropriate. Do I think he's playing some character when he's more subdued in his affections? No.
Unless your friends said they're pretending to be someone else, you're just noticing how they shift to acknowledge their girl is in the room. Just like they're probably not showing the full extent of their affection towards her as they would if they were alone together.
No, you don't have to play a character. You just have to learn what is appropriate behaviour given the situation. A little peacocking when your girl enters is not inappropriate.

Naw. Be yourself. When you find someone you like who genuinely likes you for who you are it'll be so much more worth it if that's your goal. If you're pretending to be a character and she falls in love with your persona. Both of you will be hurt

No you don't. But many people do. Many people also lead shitty lives.
My philosophy is to be one congruent person as much as possible, regardless of who you talk to and the social situation. This lets you relax and be calm and confident because you know who you are really well and you don't need to worry about constantly changing who you and adapting to the ever changing social situation. But of course, you must also calibrate yourself socially. It sounds contradictory but calibration is different than being someone who you are not.

I think identity is a social construction. People think you are whoever they think you are. But you're an animal just doing stuff because you like doing it. I think you can be yourself without having to pretend.
