“I just knew” is an ego defence mechanism to avoid rejection… In order to save yourself from potential embarrassment, your ego tells you any excuse imaginable, so that you don’t even try to begin with.
That’s because your ego would rather tell itself that the reason you dont have something with her, is not because you are not good enough for her, but rather because you didn’t even try.
That way your self-esteem is better protected, whereas if you tried and failed your self-esteem would have been damaged because the ego would have taken the rejection as proof that you were indeed not good enough like you feared.
So no, it’s not that you seriously think she “doesn’t have time for a boyfriend”. That excuse is also your ego telling you that so that you don’t feel bad about not trying.
Because yes, even not trying can hit your self esteem, that way your ego says: “well, she probably doesn’t have time for dating” because that way you feel like it’s not even in your control, even if you tried.
But when the ego sees that another guy takes her, that excuse is erased and you get hit again.
your ego would rather tell you that you are not approaching, not because you are a pussy or a coward (which hits your self esteem) but because let’s be real if she says she doesn’t have time for a boyfriend that’s just something you gotta respect

If you are serious, this is what you fight in yourself. But you chose if/when to be serious. It is imo ok to let one slide from time to time.
