Focus on listening to what the other person is saying. If you're trying to plan your next sentence when they're talking you're not gonna hear the words that might trigger that natural response.

Conversations are very domain specific.

For example, having a conversation with your mother is different from having a conversation with a stranger.

You can gain confidence in a specific domain of conversation by doing it a lot, so you build your skills, and then also getting good results from your conversations.

I think a lot of people have it wrong. Many think confidence comes first and then the skills and results will take care of themselves. The opposite is typically true. The skills come first through a lot of awkward trial and error, then as you learn the results come, and then lastly, you obtain the confidence.

Confidence is, after all, just the belief that you can successfully do something. It makes no sense to be confident in a situation you have no skills in and so the outcome is likely to be bad.

Case in point: Virgins typically aren't confident while having sex. And we accept that it's going to be awkward the first few times they do it. We understand the confidence will grow as they get better at sex with more experience.

Ask questions that aren't just yes or no answers.

Speak slower and don't answer straight away think a few seconds of what to answer so you don't stutter and by speaking slower you will appear more confident. Bonus tip: speak with a lower tone your voice will sound deeper which sounds better.
