Telephone numbers are for setting up in person meetups/dates (coffee dates for the first one) so that you can control the dynamic/conversation and to judge and drive her interest level (attraction) in you. You can't do this over the phone. And if she is stuck on her ex and won't stop talking about him regardless of you trying to change the subject, then it is easy to extract yourself from the date, by having to be somewhere.

First meetups should be light, fun, and short.

Suggest reading The System by Doc Love. Learn about Challenge, Interest Level, The Truth Triangle, The Bottom Line Factor. The Doc comes off as corny, but his advise on dealing with chicks is rock solid.
