Choose a small number of flattering photos. Your pics are vital, so take the time to get some that look like you made an effort! Wear clean clothes, preferably something more than just a random t-shirt. Fix your hair. Take the time to consider what the background says about you, places you might go, interests you might have. No hunting or fishing pics, and no posing next to a car or truck. Make sure your main pic is a very good headshot, and that you include at least one photo that shows your entire body.
Don't try to be cute or clever with the profile. Keep it simple. Avoid telling too much about yourself -- especially making sure to leave out off-putting crap like video games, dungeons and dragons, pokemon, smoking weed... all the shit that instantly tells women that you have no personality. Instead, go for one or two unusual opinions or conversational prompts that give tiny insights into your interests... things like "always looking for meals where it's okay to have cheese with fish," or "I wonder what kind of films would Hitchcock would make if he had access to today's CGI."
And don't dilly-dally with the chats that go on and on, boring people to death by never getting around to asking them out to meet you. Get to the point. There are too many people wasting each other's time these days.

A friend was telling me tinder is useless and dating apps don’t get men anywhere. Apparently you get no matches is this the case ?

Just approach girls in person. Better that way anyway. This isn’t a brag lol, but I’m very attractive (24m) and don’t get matches. However, I’m always getting checked out in the real world, so that’s why I say just approach girls. Rejection is better than regret anyway.

Not even to get groceries? Gas for your car? Basic errands? Hey man you can talk to a girl anywhere. It’s all about confidence at the end of the day.

It depends on your age, your appearance, and your intentions.
Young men (18-29) tend to have the hardest time because there is always a slightly older man with a well-established career to be found on the next swipe. Young women will typically be more attracted to the maturity, money, and interests of the guys a few years older than they are to the ones their age.
The exception is really good looking people who are just there to hookup, because at those younger ages, hookup people folks to look for matches of roughly the same age, and only care about attractiveness.
If you want to see what girls are dealing with, just spend some time reading r/tinder and r/bumble, and see the ignorant games and jokes and lack of maturity or attractiveness that young guys are putting out there.

Great. I hope it doesn’t kill my self esteem

Your mental health might drastically decrease by using dating apps. Might. It’s a risk, and a heavy one at that. If you don’t get matches, don’t take it personally. It will be very tricky not to, but not matching on tinder does not make you less of a man. If anything it just confirms that you’re more a man than you thought, which isn’t a dig at you; it’s just how the dating climate is these days.
In person approaches will always come on top over online dating. Always has, always will

Don't
Why?

Tinder for flings and one night stands, Hinge for an actual relationship. You’ll see many posts about it online, but make sure you have decent photos on your profile. Most guys, even if they aren’t the best looking, fail at online dating apps because their photos just simply suck.
Any tips of photos? I want a relationship I don’t like flings

It's gonna take you a while to start getting results. It takes a while to start understanding what works and what doesn't. It takes a while to find the right balance of engaging messages without being gamey and getting to know a girl without being boring. First time I used Tinder - 0 results. The second time I managed to get one girl out. The third time I managed to get 3 out. The fourth time (current one) I have managed to get 8 so far in the span of 2 months.
Get the apps with zero expectations and gain some experience. If you get something great, if not don't get discouraged it's normal. This doesn't mean that dating apps don't work it simply means that you haven't figured out a way to get the results that you wanted and you need to spend more time figuring things out. Delete the apps for a few months and try again.

Yeah, learn how to pick up women at the bars or normal everyday situations.
I don’t really go to bars not a fan of going out at night to bars or clubs
