Just approach and fail consistently. The thing is, knowing all the theory in the world is useless if you are too nervous to hold a conversation. The more you approach, the less nervous you'll get, the more you can start thinking on your feet and apply that theory.
Another thing, it's about consistency and repetition rather than doing crazy things. It's better to do 5 approaches every day, than 30 approaches in one day. This game is all about consistency, you MUST be consistent or you'll fall behind.

Okay here's real world advice. My first for the new year.
Funny story about that. We hit the wrist band craze a good couple years before it hit my city, and so I started wearing them constantly. We were also at the top of our fashion in regards to awesome boots, flared jeans, etc. But it got to the point where I couldn't go to the shops for a pie without wearing EVERYTHING and looking completely out of place. Until one day I put it all down, and said: No more. That was a great day.
I read a great book when I was younger, Radical Honesty, which despite its craziness and shortcomings taught me that in moments of horrible anxiety, a great way out is just to say it. Caution: It can fuck up a lot of relationships, but still ... man, living on the edge! It's exhilirating.
Don't bother talking to shop attendants. I mean, really. Don't. Just, don't. You'll never be able to seperate whether they like you from whether they're trying to do their job, and in some cases trying to wrap things up at the end can really ruin their day.
But do go and do something you want to do. Go check out clothes, go to the cafe, sit down, drink something, and start opening. Go into the supermarket and wander the shelves with something and chat up about what you're looking for, or cooking later, or even that you just like the look of the girl, whatever. That's super how it's meant to be done. It's meant to seem natural, or in the case of just going up saying they're cute - spontaneous. If you were doing it properly, the opening would very hardly every fail, I assure you.
As for you feeling like a creeper, well you might have come off as a creeper. Okay let's get super serious for a second... you are actually a stranger to these people and they have no idea who you are, what you're going through, what you want... and they have their own lives to live. You really can't expect anything, good or bad.
But most importantly, almost every guy I've seen do pickup, unless they're having success - are doing it horribly horribly wrong and really do look like scum of the earth creepers. Sorry dude, that's the breaks. That's what you have to go through to come out amazing. So, you'll have just have keep your heart in the right place, try not to let it fuck you up (many guys will turn bitter and never recover properly), and soldier on.
Hope that helps ...

Coming off as a creeper will happen more often than not in early approaches.
Fail quicker. Fail hundreds of times so that being a creeper isn't bad to your own ego.
For example, I recall stopping 2 girls asking for gum. It went interesting. The girl that gave me gum looked impressed at me, that I had the guts to randomly approach like that. The other girl looked at me like I was SCUM and looked extremely shocked.
The point is: You will get creeped out looks. You will get rejected. You will be embarrassed over and over, especially until you get good at it. But those who are successful? They don't mind failing hundreds of times.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
This won't apply to the OP, who isn't even approaching, but in terms of the creeper comments ... having kept in touch with a few lairs over the past decade, most guys will never get out of the creeper phase :-)
Doing it a lot helps, but eventually the guy will also need to either twig on what he's doing wrong (most never will), or run into someone who can tell them and actually listen and enact their advice (most never will). I have a feeling that if we had actual statistics, they would be very depressing.
Not to put anyone off, but them's the facts. Just repeating mistakes can waste a good few years of your life and not fix anything. On the other hand, listening to most of the dickheads out there will also fuck you up because their advice is terrible.
I'm sure glad I never have to go through that again ;-)

Good honest view about being "creeper."
So based on what you said:
Figure out what you're doing wrong/Get someone to tell them what they're doing wrong.
There needs to be an understanding that successful Day2 rate will probably be in the single digits (Yes we're talking 5%-ish)
So what's your personal advice after implied years of experience?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
People need to be super aware of what they're doing and not fall into the "I don't give a shit what others think" trap. Keep as best records as you can, I used to leave notes on my phone after each set, and type them in each night.
"I'm alpha and don't give a shit" is some of the most detrimental advice I've seen. People stop taking responsibility for their actions, or how other people perceive and react to those actions, so how can they learn and improve to make the reactions better?
Go out solo, go out in groups. Get lots of advice and instant feedback on if you're doing it right. And if you try it for a few days and it's not working, and someone can't tell you what you're doing wrong - they're likely wrong and it was bad advice. You can try again later after you try something else.
But almost all of it will be wrong in some way or another, or missing something or other, or simply be a shitty method and not work for you.
You can see, none of that is great advice. In short, there's no quick or easy fix, and most will fail. You can only hope you're not one of them.
(As for successful Day 2 rate, I don't think about it like that. I used to be out searching for a great woman to begin a relationship with... and I could do it within a few weeks which was efficient enough for me. I have to wonder about the psychology of guys that isn't enough for.)
[–]30vanquish 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I appreciate your feedback and thoughts. I agree that "alpha and not caring" only gets you so far because you're not improving on your skills, especially if you're messing up the same way.
I keep many different outlines in my mind and then after 100 approaches I see if it was "successful" or not.
Anyways, I feel that each person should create their own method with some outlines of others + their own experiences.
For intent, it's up to the guy. With 5%, I'm giving the reality check that the majority of interactions are terrible, awkward, painful. There's no magic way to get every girl.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. We literally wasted years doing the same things over and over, sure we were doing it right but "missing something", only to discover everything about it was completely wrong.
I hate seeing guys do that. It's just... a waste of time. If they could find and fix those problems faster, they could just get past this shit, get a girl they like, and focus on the rest of life's adventures.
Yes, in the end every successful guy has his own method. Even the top guys, they all do it differently - even those that mentored under each other came out with different ideas in the end. Even my friends, though IMHO I'm the most successful one, the others do it differently (and some are even completely soul-less).
I find it hard to seperate what works for me from what should work for others, though I can often see what works for some of the top guys absolutely does not work for others. I'm not sure if they can see that or not, or blindly believe it should work.
For a long time, well... in 2004-2005, there was a lot of talk about tailoring things to yourself. Now it seems to be going more into the way of, "Do as I do." Then again, when I give advice to others I'm pretty much doing the same thing ...
5% awkward and painful? I'm not sure. By the end... by which I mean 6 years ago where I had it down the way I want it... you go out and meet a girl, it clicks, you have a Day 2 the next day, and then you're dating. Easy peasy. There might be one or two weeks before that where you're meeting set after set and still remembering how not to do things wrong, or meeting people it's not clicking with - but those memories fade super fast once you have someone you like.
[–]30vanquish 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So instead of failing over and over blindly, you need to see what didn't work and adjust accordingly. Makes sense.
I know to tailor it to myself. Confidence seems to be the universal principle.
There might be one or two weeks before that where you're meeting set after set and still remembering how not to do things wrong, or meeting people it's not clicking with - but those memories fade super fast once you have someone you like.
That paragraph makes it sound so easy, which is probably is once you have your own model down perfectly. I'll keep your replies in mind as I move forward.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That paragraph makes it sound so easy
For me, it is. It almost pains me to see others fuck it up, and in some cases fuck it up for years on end and still not get it. I just want to take over their body and show them how to do it, or alternately shoot them in the face so I don't have to see it anymore :-D
In most cases it's a combo of a fucked up personality (starting off too weak "poor me", quickly changing into bullshit "fuck everyone, women are shit" fake alpha), and fucked up technique (not getting in close and touching from the start will cause most other traditional game afterwards to fail - try explaining the basics are wrong to people who "know what they're doing" because they've been doing it for so long and can open a set but haven't closed in a few years).
First world problems :-P
But I'm in a great LTR, as were the ones before it. Years of failure was totally worth it. If you can make it. It's just so frustrating to know that most won't, and be unable to stop it. (Then again, I take silent satisfaction in some of it because some people are just really shit and don't deserve to reproduce, hehe).
[–]30vanquish 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again, good thoughts.
Thanks for the specific observations, most of it being: keep on going and you'll eventually succeed if you're willing to see what you need to improve on as well.
I also agree that the fake alpha mindset isn't the best way to go about things. I'm sure there's a third way - knowing you're alpha without having to be a jerk. Asshole does not equal alpha.
Touching from the start is so important. I was about to address this issue in future interactions starting tomorrow.

I don't have anxiety disorders or social phobias?
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ah, I didn't mean to imply either that you have anything so serious. If you repeatedly expose yourself to the contexts, procedures, and fears that you afraid of you will become less afraid. In this case that means finding a way to make yourself cold approach despite your fear. It only gets easier.
EDIT: The neediness/creepiness goes away after you stop being afraid of rejection. I went with a friend to Times Square last year with the sole purpose of getting rejected by strangers. After the first two or three you enter social god mode and people respond really positively. The creepiness that you feel and that perhaps others perceive comes from your tangible fear.

I need to do that. Anyone feel like winging in TS?

I'm going to be in the city sometime this week. Little experience at seduction, but i'm down.
[–]30vanquish 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're feeling empty because of the disappointment you have with not being able to get past AA.
It comes down to this: Are you willing to put your ego aside and accept any potential rejection/awkwardness? Don't be afraid to be creepy either because you'll most likely never run into them again. Don't care so much.
Everything is your mindset. Nothing is really weird. That's all in your mind.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yeh..
Stop putting pressure on yourself. I wouldn't go out to get numbers.
I would go out to get a new shirt/shoes/TV what ever. Not going to buy shit, but in my mind I am. Totally removes any anxiety. Then when I am there, be aware, and ready for any opportunities. any excuse to talk to a girl is valid: "Eh? Where is X?" "Oh.so hungry. Know where the food court is?" "EXcuse me...I am going on a date tomorrow. Do you like this shirt on me?" ...whatever...whatever! Anything!
TRy try try try, and always fail. Don't walk away without having failed first. Or better, having gotten the #.
Also. Do you dress up when you are buying a TV? No. So don't.
and kept walking
Oh so you were approaching people walking from one place to another? That's really hard to do, from a few sources I've seen recently. (I looked it up because I was trying to do the same sort of thing.) Better to approach girls who are currently stopped doing something like looking at a particular piece of clothing or stopped for some other reason.
You know how the people working in some booths try to stop customers walking by? They're like "what kind of phone you got?" or whatever. You can see them eyeing you long before you get to them and you just want to avoid them? I just had that observation and thought that might also be part of the reason: people walking don't want to be stopped.
[–]Richandler 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You also know what they are going to say to you in some respect. They are going to try to sell you something you know that you don't want to buy. When approaching during the day you can't immediate try to sell something to someone. They are looking to buy you, they're window shopping. You have to be the consumer and on their side. The conversation starter has to be something non-personal. If it's related to what you're doing or shopping for it's far more natural and doesn't come off as creepy. Where did you get that drink? Does this shirt make me look like I'm trying to hard? Would a purse like that make a good birthday present for my mom?
[–]idimmu 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I think the issue is you're totally not outcome independent.
You can deal with asking for directions or harassing shop workers because you're not after a particular outcome, and you're still beating yourself up over 1 failed approach 2 months ago..
You're going to have to deal with that. Personally when I approach it's to find out if they're cool enough to be worth my time and single.
You're already not getting laid from day game, so doing loads of cold approaches that fail isn't going to make your situation any worse is it, and it'll get you some real actual experience that you can then base future interactions on, as well as a self esteem and social conditioning injection.

Here... here... This is the essence of not giving a fuck. Dependency in any form is not good for attracting women. If you are too needy, the female attraction shuts down. Women want a strong male. One who doesn't need them for validation. It just sucks that usually, the only strong outcome independent males that women interact with are assholes. If you can be strong, not needy, and not an asshole, then you are well ahead of the competition.

Dude, reframe.
When you're approaching women you're screening them to see if they're cool enough for you to want to go on a date with.
For all you know, those girls were unemployed drug addicts living off benefits with babies at home from several crack daddies, yet you've given them enough power to emotionally affect you for several months after the fact ..
OP, your current mindset is: "I am going to get out to successfully open and bang these hot cuties." This creates anxiety and AA because you're creating a condition to feel fulfilled. Your new mindset is: "I am going out to learn how to handle rejection."
Try this as an experiment: forget about indirect openers for one day. Go direct all day, it will majorly help you get over your AA. Walk up to cute girls without hiding your intentions. Smile, act super confident, project your voice, maintain eye contact, and tell her she's cute and that you wanted to meet her. Vibe with her. If the cat's purring, pet it; aka: get her #.

Be comfortable with failure. don't expect yourself to be perfect always.
I've been having a VERY similar issue. I think the whole "stop building it up" thing is good advice; it might help to try somewhere else too, just to reset your mind in a new place.
[–]Leshow -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Go caveman. Don't shower or shave or dress nice. You're just putting pressure on yourself by building it up. Detach yourself from what you think they think of you.
Also, I rarely do a cold approach. In public I will catch her eye, make sure I don't break contact, then wink or smile. After that I just go up and say hi, no need for any other opener.
