Tyler Durden on How to Not Give A Damn (2 part video)
Basically, warm up by acting completely ridiculous and off the wall with your friends, and then you will get in this mental state that is detached from your ego. If you can summon the social courage to enthusiastically pretend you are an alligator or robot or whatever, then this will get you over the hump and opening sets should be a breeze.

If I had more than one upvote to give you, I would. I first experienced it on this video, and whenever I hear it I think of the video and feel doubly awesome.

your link is better, i have it on itunes i didn't bother to listen to my link.
i just have "adrenaline music" pumping straight after dinner. a mini foam party when washing up, and all thru showering shaving and dressing for the night ahead i have party/club tunes super loud while i'm running round before taxi/friends arrive. for day time positive mind set [like heading to an afternoon bbq] i go with laid back summery pop punk in my car on the way

There are two ways you can get in state with exercise.
Endorphine rush from a good session of cardio, usually in the 40-60 minute range of intense running / cycling / swimming.
A proper sprinting session. 8-12 sets of cycle sprints, top speed / high resistance for one minute each, 5 minute breaks in between each set. At the end you might feel nauseous, but this feeling goes away after a few minutes and gets replaced with euphoria.
Then there is of course, good old banter with your bros. Rip on each other, say / do crazy shit to each other, laugh it up and lighten the mood.

Have conversations in my head about how awesome I am. Listen to pump up music. Hit the gym before going out.

More like hitting the gym all the time. From working out regularly not only do you constantly look 'pumped', but your body changes to look like it permanently (provided you are eating okay too).

Agreed. Keeping a steady workout schedule (accompanied by good eating) is pretty necessary to increasing your all around energy levels. That being said, if I know I'm going out Friday night, I'll make an extra effort to extend my workout on Friday; go faster, harder, for longer. You get to the point where you're so exhausted that once you finally get back home, shower, and get ready for the night, you have a new sense of calm energy about you. Its quite euphoric.

That's a great way to get in state, I'll try it next time for sure. If I'm not feeling it, I'll usually warm myself up by hitting excessively on a less-confident-looking girl and see how surprised she is that a guy like me is hitting on her. I'll escalate as far as I can as quickly as I can without going for a close and then abruptly pull away and say "I have to go, nice meeting you!" and then go talk to someone else.

Do this somewhere public!

Slightly work out, hit the shower, and listening to metal does the trick for me. (Also, browsing this subreddit is part of the routine now)

State is invented. Just rip off the band-aid once or twice, open no matter how hard it is, be slightly exhilarated from doing it, and so you keep doing it until you get somewhere.
