Great quotes! I'm a big fan of Alan Watts though he would definitely disagree with this quote 'Problems are a constant in life'. Life isn't a problem to be solved, its an experience to be enjoyed. It's a matter of mindset.
Love the quotes on responsibility. Spot on! Also the quotes on independence and not needing the approval of others. I heartily agree!

I think he would say 'the only way to solve those problems is to stop trying to solve them, then they just disappear'.

Tell that to starving people in Africa.

And the award for 'pedantically out of context comment of the thread' goes to:

Who you are is defined by what you’re willing to struggle for. The true measurement of self-worth is not how a person feels about her positive experiences, but rather how she feels about her negative experiences.

Goddamn, I can't get my hands on this book fast enough.

I'm worried if I have this attitude i won't accomplish anything. I already have enough trouble getting good grades, doing well in my career, keeping my house clean. And yes, I want success super badly and keep screwing up and being lazy. But I don't think I'll do better if I stop caring about all the above.
This is coming from a huge Mark Manson fan.

Hang out with successful people and people headed in that dirrection. You sort of just naturally emulate them and mix into their culture. Drop the things holding you back and find the things that will push you forward.
Here's a useful TED talk on breaking bad habits: https://youtube.com/watch?v=-moW9jvvMr4
Edit: It's about thinking with reason, not emotion. You have a goal, an objective. You are hellbent on reaching it and with god as your bloody witness. Nothing else matters. You're to busy with your shit, to care about anything else. Focus and let everything else fade away into the abyss.

You aren't supposed to stop caring about it. He doesn't mean to stop giving fucks about everything just give fucks about the important shit. Basically allocate your fucks. I really recommend the book.
One thing he points out is if you aren't doing what you need to do in order to get what you want you don't really want it. He says life is filled with struggling but you have to decide what you want to struggle for. If you really want success you need to decide to struggle for success.

So according to the first one, I should go in to approaching girls expecting a bad experience?
[–]ArchangelFuhkEsarhes 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Basically to its simplest terms if used in this scenario it means approach a girl with the mindset of a good time instead of out of want/need. The idea is if you are trying to "get" a lot of women your mind starts creating a sense of emptiness because if you have to pursue something it means you have a lack of it. Pretty basic seddit advice but he wants you to apply it to everything not just women.

Expect a good experience.pleas
I guess following the logic of the post don't go seeking a good experience, and accept a potential bad experience. I guess wanting a good experience demonstrates lack and if you don't have one you will be disappointed. idk if it necessary to follow that prescription. It may help.
But pleas assume attraction when you meet new people pretend y'all are already friends and expect things to go well
those are some important self fulfilling prophecies.
If you expect to fail it will be unlikely you won't.

Right now, you're giving a fuck. Just don't give a fuck.

Interesting parallels to this article, but good points nonetheless.

Funny thing you said that because in the book Mark writes that he is always wrong, but as he grows older he just becomes less wrong. He says that people change, and that when your future self reads some of the shit you write today, chances are he won't agree completely.
[–]migoboi 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ah I see... somewhat of a hyperbole of being always wrong, but I get the sentiment, hopefully we all get less wrong as we mature.
I should have been more specific, below isthe "parallel" I was thinking of. ;)
I was in love with the result — the image of me on stage, people cheering, me rocking out, pouring my heart into what I’m playing — but I wasn’t in love with the process. And because of that, I failed at it. Repeatedly. Hell, I didn’t even try hard enough to fail at it. I hardly tried at all.
