As guys who are not naturally good with women, we need something to point us in the right direction, "training wheels" so to speak. The double-edged sword of the pickup community is that all that information can kind of fuck with your head. When I was a newbie and I heard a natural give the advice to "just be cool and everything will be fine," I thought that's easy for you to say, but some of us need the "pickup process."
What I came to realize is that there is a natural inside each and every one of us, it's just, like in Pink Floyd's The Wall, over the years brick after brick has been put up to keep us from being in touch with that part of ourselves. Becoming a natural is about breaking through those mental blocks so you can be 1)comfortable in your own skin, 2)comfortable interacting with women, 3)able to assert yourself and be the man in the relationship.
This is just something I was talking to about a friend earlier today, I'm not saying it's 100% true or complete, but to me it made sense that most of what pickup teaches ultimately points to something along these lines. The ironic thing is that when you try to force this, as a newbie, it comes off very fake and that's why it takes so long to get good at this. You have go out and go out and go out until gradually you undo your old habits and become comfortable and assertive.
It would be great to hear some thoughts on this.
