I feel that such a huge part of pickup is about the choices and decisions you make.
My view has always been that things are determined, but that the processes behind this are so complex we should live as if we had free will. So I have always lived as if I have had free will. I want to get better with women, I choose to make a difference. I want to be smarter, I choose to educate myself. I want some peace of mind, I choose to meditate. And so on...
I'm a big Sam Harris fan and he has just come out with his new book Free Will and this lecture. Here's a condensed version.
Basically his idea is that free will is a complete myth. Any choices you make are simply those that have arisen from your unconscious mind that you have no control over. You were always going to choose what you were going to choose.
For some reason this has kind of bummed me out a little. Even though I understood that determinism was likely happening, Harris has presented it from the inside out (from the mind to reality), which I had not really contemplated before.
I wonder how Tyler fits the free will debate into his life? In his latest video he mentions something about how people are simply riding the wave of unconscious processes.
How do you square free will and the 'choices' you make?
