Enlighten me again, what are the key differences between cocky and confident?

Cocky = "I am great person... WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU IF YOU DON'T AGREE?"

Confident = "I am a great person.. So I don't really care what you think."

It took me awhile to understand but this is based off a kid from my school that had no success with women despite what I perceived as confidence. I studied his reaction to certain situations to see what made him different. Basically he craved validation which is not real confidence.

I would say that cocky is an exaggeration of confident, e.g., being overly self-confident.

I think the real distinction is between egotistical and confident, and there were some good responses to that in this discussion.

Confidence is key. In my mind, cockiness is a synonym for arrogance.

I think confident is knowing how sweet you are, and occasionally showing it when asked to. Cocky is telling someone how sweet you are.

One of the lines I use I would refer to as cocky: "I feel I can't be making snorky comments because I don't know that much about X. Tell me more" (it sounds better in swedish). One line that I'd say is confident but not cocky: her:"what do you do?" "I study engineering physics" "You are such a nerd!" "Luckily I dont care what you think, I care what I think"
