A month ago, finebushlane suggested we try to get this sub-reddit moving by positing field reports, etc. I'll put myself out there, even though my latest attempts were unsuccessful...

So, I very recently broke up with my girlfriend, and since then I've tried "picking up" two women. The first was in a store where I happened to meet a cute girl who was there shopping with her mom. They were talking in Chinese, which I speak at about a 4 on a 10 point scale, so when they said something interesting in Chinese I commented on it in English. It took her a moment to figure out what just happened, which I think helped build interest. In the meantime, I finished my transaction first. Before I left, I asked for her phone number, but she just laughed and said "My mom's right here!" in Chinese. She gave me her email address instead, but my experience is email addresses are almost always just polite ways of brushing people off.

The other recent attempt, I was out dancing. A cute girl I've known for a little while was there. She had carpooled there with a male friend (known to have a different girlfriend). Near the end of the evening, I suggested we go out to eat, but she declined. I can think of three reasons:

1) It's really hard to separate two friends in such a situation, especially without backup

2) She thinks I'm still with my old gf

3) She's not that in to me

4) Reason four would obviously be that she actually is seeing the guy she caught a ride with, but that seems unlikely.

In such situations I usually just assume "not that in to me" to make it easier to keep looking elsewhere.

Any thoughts?
