Tonight I was stopping in at a liquor store on the way to a friends place and it is pretty dead in there. I walk up to the checkout line with a six pack and see one of the cashiers is reading a book, so I went to the other cash register which had someone else in front of me. The cashier reading a book sees me, and waves me over. She was reading Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. While she is ringing me up, I strike up a conversation about the book and Chucks other works. After a minute or two I decided it was time to nut up or shut up. And it went like this:
<Convo about the book...>
Me: Can I get your number?
Her: For what?
Me: Well, I like reading, and you like reading, so I was thinking that we could meet up for coffee sometime
Her: I don't really have a phone number... but I work here pretty much every night so if you stop in I'll probably be here (At this point she is turning kind of red, I can't tell if she is embarrassed for being asked out at work, or blushing)
Me: Alright, maybe I'll see you around then
<Then I walk out of the liquor store>
Was the not having a phone number a shit test? That seems pretty unusual looking back. What would you guys have done differently? Should I go back later this week and try arranging a meet up, or did I miss my opportunity? What would you guys do?
