I think you're problem might be not asking "big" enough, open-ended questions. Yes or no questions lead the conversation nowhere. When they answered your question, you should be asking them why they have that opinion and start a conversation. Tangents are a wonderful thing too. Don't be afraid to change the subject. If they say something that reminds you of a story, tell it. Also, it's important to escalate and change your relationship. If you were standing next to their table talking, ask to sit down, make more eye contact, smile more, talk about deeper topics. Be sure to have a time constraint. Almost any first conversation with strangers is going to go stale. Get out before it does. Stop while the conversation is still interesting, so it will make more sense to say "I'd really like to talk with you more."

I may get in trouble for saying this, but... while guys always say they wish girls would ask them out, they still want to feel like they "scored" and won the game. I think they just want women to be more clear about their level of attraction and be more accessible and consistent in their feelings. You might want to look into David Wygant. He has some materials targeted towards straight women.

if you are a straight guy with a lot of social anxiety, talking to other guys can be a great way to build up your social calibration, but you should also start talking to girls too..

Openers are pretty irrelevant, compared to the ability to sustain a conversation, as you have seen. Becoming a good conversationalist is tough and requires lots of practice.

One "fake it until you make it" tip is to keep a list of questions in your mind that you can ask when there's a lull in conversation. Like "so you guys from here", "seen any good movies lately", whatever as long as they keep the conversation going. Then make sure you listen and try to key off things the others are saying when you chime in.
