You know what your base line is. It's you. The real you.

Your aim is to go there, and take her or him with you.

Don't rush it, but also don't delay it. Show your true self, and your true intentions as your main priority.

If he or she isn't cool with that, you just saved maybe years on a dud relationship.

But yeah, show your true self. Even if you're a total wreck and depressed as fuck, whatever. Show that little bit that actually gets you out of bed in the morning.

Don't ever deliberately go up to someone and try to crack onto them. That never works for anyone who isn't shallow. But just keep it in your mind that you want to meet people, and that when offered with the chance, just act on it.

And if you're not fit, at least make a bit of an effort.

But yeah, the goal is to find someone whose baseline is not far from your own. That means being honest and forward about what you like and don't like.
