approached in over 8 months
This is a seduction horror story. You should approach a lot more.

I've been trying to say something to this girl at my school for about a month and finally did today
You waited a month to say hi to someone? WTF? Do you think the guy fucking her waited a month to say hi? Brah, come on now.
first girl I've approached in over 8 months
You need to stop being such a pussy. Not meaning to hurt your feelings, but you're in school. Be social. Talk to everyone. Just have fun. You gotta be a lot more social or you are just gonna end up being scared to go out and talk to anyone.

Good. Then once you start approaching more girls, it'll get easy for you. Just don't beat yourself up about it. And don't wait months to talk to a girl. If you see someone, say hi. Some will talk back, some will blow you off. But if someone blows you off for saying hi, wasn't someone you wanna hang out with anyway.

Keep getting rejected until it no longer phases you, then you will have developed yourself and your character and believe it or not without you even knowing your confidence will have improved which women can smell from a mile away.

It doesn't suck that bad. Next time, don't wait so long. That way you won't be as emotionally invested from pouring over her for a month! :)

Progress is progress. A lot of guys wouldn't have the balls to ask for a number in that situation. I got turned down this morning actually, and whether or not there was anything I could have done better I'm using the experience to make next time easier and stronger. It's been 8 months, just gotta shake that rust off.

Sometimes the biggest sticking point a guy can have is that they haven't been rejected enough. Keep getting rejected man. No matter how good you get, it's just part of the game :)

Imagine when you're an old man, and if you hadn't asked this girl for her number, you would be upset by the fact that you didn't like wtf what did I ever have to lose?
But... you did, you actually tried to go for the girl that you wanted, you had the balls to do it and did everything you could, you can't do anything more than that, no one can take that away from you ever

You're braver than I. I can't even do that even if the girl is giving me signs of interest. That's my dream, to ask out a random stranger girl that I find attractive. I guess I'll just have to stick to meeting women from online dating sites.

Just go there and talk. If it helps count to 3 in your head then just go, don't hesitate

Well, because saying hi, asking for her name and asking for her number straight away is not how it works, this is considered creepy, unless you are godly looking and already have the whole school wanting you lol. Its a positive, now that you know that rejection is not as scary as you imagined it would be, progress is the key.

What do I do then if I don't have any classes with her, and don't have a reason to talk to her

Most of the things in this sub don't apply to school due to the cliqueiness. Try finding mutual friends of hers or get someone to introduce you. In my experience lots of girls are friendly with each other, so becoming friends with a girl you're not into will still be worthwhile because she has friends she can introduce you to and so on.

Read some of the topics on here, really useful, but this approach is just bad. Dont take this negatively, just look at this as an experience and a door that will lead you to improving your game. I think we all been there, those first approaches, when you feel you are going to die and have absolutely no clue what you are doing and failing miserably (my case lol).
