I got some good response to the video FR I posted recently, so Tofu and I want to see if it has any legs as more of a regular feature. Thus I present -
Guidelines for posting video field reports:
-If you can, use Vimeo to host your videos. This will keep it a little more private than Youtube. In fact, you can just link directly to your video from Seddit (link karma woo). Feel free to suggest another option for video hosting.
-Keep your video under 10 minutes. It's easy to get carried away when you're talking, so please keep time in mind out of consideration for others. We can also adjust the time limit as the need permits. This also means...
-Plan what you want to talk about. If you were out for 3 hours, tell us about most useful/entertaining/inspiring parts. I'm really curious to see what people share when they have to trim it down.
-Please use a [VFR] tag at the beginning of your post to indicate video.
-Feel free to also submit your written FR, perhaps side-by-side with your video. Video and text each have unique strengths, so use video where it's actually appropriate in helping you better tell your story. Videos are a lot slower to consume; if there's no good/compelling reason for making it a video, don't do it.
-Don't be afraid to try something new! If you've got other media, recordings, pictures, video, whatever will put people in your experience, try it out! Do whatever you need to do to convey your story, even if your style is different than everyone else's. Hopefully everyone here knows, you don't get any better until you try something you've never done before :)
That's it for now. Hopefully as people begin submitting videos we'll get a sense of what works, what doesn't, and where to go with it. Especially since video takes longer to watch than text takes to read, we need to see if it's adding anything significant to the experience. Please be liberal with your suggestions, your feedback, and especially your actual videos! Let's give it a shot and we'll see if it actually sticks.
