Cacioppo is the man. He was a researcher for the elaboration likelihood model. A model that's worth a look for those among us who like to bluff. the TL;DR version of it: people will only think about the reasons presented before them if they have the ability, time, and desire to. If they're lacking any of those, they'll go off of external factors (A guy dressed as a doctor said this was healthy? Sounds good to me.)

I just finished the article, and I'm somewhat skeptical about cause and effect relations here. Admittedly my teachers were highly Reductionistic and that rubbed off on me, and while there seems to be high levels of correlation between loneliness and the named issues, there is no definitive proof loneliness caused them. The indisputable evidence in favor of the idea is Harlow's Monkey experiment, but that's a single incident in monkeys, not humans, that may lack broader applicability because the isolation was so absolute at such a young age, transcending mere lack of intimacy.

While I suppose I agree in general, there is definitely a subset of people who are NOT adversely affected by being alone. But then, the article discusses loneliness, not simply being alone. I think it is necessary to differentiate those things (as the article does for the most part). If I was the last person on Earth, yet retained all the conveniences I'm used to (water, electricity, etc.) I would be perfectly fine.
