You can text right away. You should have gotten the # in context of setting up plans to meet, so your texting to setup plans should be expected.

I usually text them right away so they have my number. While on the dating site I feel like I'm getting to know them, when I text I act like they're long time friends!

Arrange a real life meet up (in a safe time/place if she needs that) ASAP ... that is even more important than getting the # - this weeds out the wafflers and fakes, etc. Then you can see if you two have chemistry and a good time. I find it best to pick a place to meet where I already have been many times and feel comfortable.

Suggest a date that shares a common interest of yours, e.g. concert, hiking, book store, etc...

There may be a small variation in how many messages it takes to accomplish these three steps, but it shouldn't take more than ten back and forth to figure out logistics such as time and location. Once you've got the number, shoot her a quick message so she can contact you if necessary. Once that's done, keep it quiet until it's time to confirm the date the day of or day before.
