Maybe this would sound dumb, but, ask silly questions: "what's your favorite color?" "beach or mountain?" "favorite animal?" and make sure to ask "and why is that"? when she answers. When you realize you will have started a conversation about something you might or not have be in common.

Read more (both novels and plays), write more, watch more quality television (not reality TV). There is no easy way to becoming better at conversation, you just need to saturate your brain with material.

I agree with pretty much all of what seduction_alchemist said.

You should forget about not carrying the conversation though. You don't want her to have to carry the conversation, you just want her to open up.

I have never met a woman that doesn't like to talk about their family, their feelings about their family, their friends, their feelings about their friends.

If you want her to open up on what she thinks about the Raiders chances this season you need to start dating dudes.

Be comtreble with the silence, look in her eyes and give her a "so what now" look, this puts pressure on her to talk. Also make more statements than questions, it makes it more natural conversation and less needy.
