I usually go with "What got you out to the bar tonight?". If they give you an interesting answer (it's my friend's birthday, whatever) you've got an easy conversation going. If they don't have an interesting answer then you give them shit for being cheap drunks who are using guys to get free drinks all night.

This does mean, however, that you have to have a good story prepared about why you're out and about tonight. This is a great chance to spew complete bullshit and get them laughing.

You just need more practice at talking to everyone. Carrying on conversations is something you have to learn with practice, there are no golden rules. There are lots of books out there on being a good conversationalist that could help you. Try learning how to entertain others and yourself through conversation before you start trying to apply PUA techniques.

Ok, here's how your conversation could go if you knew what you were doing:

I start talking to a stranger using a situational opener/observation. (Hey what are you drinking?)
They respond positively (Oh, I'm having a Mai Tai)
I talk more about this situational opener/observation in a way that relates to that person and gets them to talk more about themselves. (oh is a mai tai your favorite drink? No? What's your favorite drink? Yes? Why is it your favorite?)

The key is to ask questions about that person, and just comment and let them know you're really listening to them. Most people (women especially) just want to talk about themselves while getting a decent feel for you and your personality through your nonverbal cues. They don't really give a fuck about what you have to say, they just want to see/hear you interact with them and talk about themselves (everyone's favorite subject) in the process.

My best seductions have been two scenarios:

The girl talks a lot about herself and shit she's interested in and I just listen along and wait for opportunities to bust on her and kino escalate. These are the easiest.
The girl is a quiet girl. These types I generally try to get them to open up, but also be very comfortable with silence. She may feel uncomfortable with silence, and that's fine, but as long as I'm cool and calm, she'll feel a lot better. Bonus: these types are often the most enthusiastic when it comes to sex.

Thus why situational openers aren't the best in my opinion. On some basic level, you don't really give a shit and there's a good chance the person you're talking to doesn't give a shit. You and the person aren't really communicating.

Be more direct. Tell her you think she's attractive and you want to (whatever you want) with her. You'll get more instantly flirty conversations and things will be more organic since you have a reason and purpose for talking to her.

How about just becoming an awesome person to be around? I just finished reading @TravellinStyle comment, I was struct by the details. Despite it, I'd make sure not to do anything he says, because then I'll end up talking about topics and stuff I don't give a sh*t about. (sorry man).

I've just tried structure methods, openers and other shit, and after a couple of years you realize it's not worth it. You can get far with a particular girl ok? but that won't fulfill you in the long run, after a while it always ends in disinterest or mere sex to friendship interaction.

a) Find things you REALLY REALLY want to talk about, and go for it, and forget whatever everybody else will think. Can openers etc are just training wheels man... forget it! b) Be awesome, happy, relaxed and laid-back. c) Tell her she's great, and you'd like to get to know her better, but you have to go... finish conversation -> ask for number -> she types number in phone -> call her so she gets your phone (if fake, make sure to punish her with a comment in a funny way) -> leave.

You want to start asking questions without seeming interrogative. You can do this by asking a few open ended questions (rather than closed single-word questions) then fuel a conversation based on the answers.
