I take it you are referring to an actual conversation as opposed to simply opening (where 'hey' will supposedly do)

I have some problems here too with stranger.s in bars - ''How is your night going?'' is what my brain defaults too.

However, it sounds like you're talking about people you already kind of know? That should be a fair bit easier

Have genuine interest in them as a person. Let it fascinate you. Find out as much as you can about this person.

Look at what they are wearing, point out something and say "oh thats nice", or "what is that?". Thats a good starter. Even a simple "oh i really love your hair" is good if she has a really unusual cut or has funky color accents. They spend a lot of time on their grooming hoping you notice. Don't compliment their shoes, only fags do that.
