Your mind is a funny thing, and will betray you all the time. Professional athletes choke under pressure and guys get all nervous about approaching girls to the point where we have physical reactions as if our lives are in danger for gasp talking.

What I Learned This Weekend

I wound up going up to this really attractive girl and talking with her for a while while out at a bar. I didn't think too much about it, sure I was nervous but whatever, I figure I push through. I go up and start talking, and we kick it off really well. We're just talking about all sorts of things and we wind up talking for a good half hour (to the point where all of our friends wind up leaving and we don't even realize).

I tried escalating but I noticed every time I did, she seemed to pull back a bit and wasn't reciprocating, but she seemed really into talking with me. I eventually learn she's in a long term relationship and lives with her boyfriend. Ok, girls make stuff up like that all the time. I'll continue talking.

Turns Out She's Dating Someone Famous

I continue talking, and she tells me about some band her boyfriend is in, and I never heard of them (but my knowledge of music is very specific). I eventually eject after a while, and continue on my merry little way.

However, later I asked my friends about the band, and they tell me that they are HUGE. They ask me the girl's name, and I tell them, and they look some stuff up. Turns out she's a model and is featured in multiple music videos (for other bands).

Had I Known This, I Probably Would Have Chickened Out

Had I known that this girl was a model, I probably would have gotten way into my head, chickened out and never approached. I'm not proud of it, but it's true. Yet I was able to hold a long conversation with this girl AND be the one to eject.

It's Because Of Placing Too Much Value

It started to bug me, and I was wondering why knowing what she did for a living would pysch me out, and then it dawned on me. I am placing WAY too much value on what society thinks of her. Being a model is like the ultimate form of preselection, society is straight up telling you that this girl is hot. And being hot is oh so important. You are not a model, therefore you will not be worthy in this girl's eyes.

So society thinks she's hot, big fucking deal. That doesn't change the fact she's still a human being like everybody else. Even though she was taken, it was obvious (as my friends who watched pointed out) that she was into me (however I will not go after a taken girl... personal standards).

How Do You Ingrain This Concept?

So I get the principle of people making society's values of attractiveness their own and suddenly placing a lot of importance on models or anything similar, but how does one truly ingrain the concept? Logically, I know that they have no more value than me, but I don't feel like I have this completely ingrained. How do you ingrain it?

tl;dr: Approached cute girl not thinking much of it. Turns out she's a model and has a celebrity boyfriend. I feel like if I knew this, I would have chickened out (and I realize it's because of placing more value on her since society does). How does one overcome this?
