I swear we as humans are more connected than we could ever guess. I just finished 1984 a couple of days ago and suddenly since then I've seen several references to it every day in different threads. Coincidence? You decide.
[–]Cohomotopian 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
There's a cognitive bias for that!
[–]thecajunone 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Fully aware of that but I still see too much other examples to think it's just that. Like when you think of a friend you haven't seen in a while then that person literally calls or take the "herd mentality" for instance. Whenever you are at work and suddenly everything gets busy for no real reason. Phones are ringing, people are walking in, and your customers want everything. It always seems to happen at once. Why? Herd mentality. We're all connected on some animalistic level. Least, I believe so, just my thoughts : )

Probability, statistics and fluctuations. We are just much more to see fluctuations than real patterns. For quick and fun reference see short presentation by Michael Shermer. Really, see it, just few minutes.

Actually...

Yeah, that's the one I was looking for. My bad, sorry. I recommend this book and blog because this stuff is really interesting.

Senior psychology major here. Which makes wandering around this subreddit an amazing source of interest for me. But yes, I am all for the education of the public via sources such as the ones above...as long as they are based in good solid science.
This subreddit must be a goldmine for psychologist.

I knew exactly where that was going.

It could well have been Oscar Wilde who said "A gentleman knows a little about everything and everything about something". This was of course back when there were fewer facts in the world.

Thomas Huxley (wikiquote link), known as "Darwin's Bulldog", grandfather of Aldous Huxley. But I didn't know that quote and it's awesome so thanks.

Ask women about the things they're interested in. If you know nothing about the subject, keep asking questions until you know as much as you can handle. Then, when a different woman starts talking about that subject, you'll know enough to be able to express your own opinions on it. In the first scenario, you're making her comfortable by giving her a captive audience to talk about the thing she's passionate about. In the second one, you're impressing her by demonstrating that you have a common interest.
[–]Constantly_Wired 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This. It's easy to continue expanding on a subject to finally get to a point where you can contribute to the conversation, and have it relate to her interests.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
perfect, but there is also one important vital line that you can say:
"Wow, you're really smart"
[–]Marsupian 7 points8 points9 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As long as you can ask interesting questions I think knowledge doesn't matter that much. Just let the woman do the talking and let her talk about things she likes to talk about. Knowing which questions to ask is the most important part and I guess some knowledge can help with that.
[–]sirderpy 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
A little knowledge on a subject goes a long way, if only to know what questions to ask. I make a point of logging key things about certain courses or jobs to keep conversation flowing.
[–]ashsimmonds 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
A little knowledge is key, if you spend time learning stuff you're not legitimately interested in you're probably wasting your time - not just the time learning it, but the time talking about it also.
If a girl is talking about something pointless (to you) it's easy to manouvre it to something interesting to you, or ideally to you both.
If you're in the mood to keep her talking, a little knowledge is exactly the right amount. Remember to turn questions into statements, egg "you seem like the kinda chick who gets into insert random fashion/brand/etc", if you're wrong she'll correct you and talk about more stuff until something interesting you can hook on comes up, if you're right she'll be impressed and you can play it from there.
What it comes down to, men and women don't need common interests to get along, they just need to know the other appreciates their interests.
[–]sirderpy 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I guess I just retain knowledge, keeping a convo going is never something i've had a problem with and I put it down to the fact I know what questions to ask
[–]choc_is_back 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A-men from a fellow 'fact sponge'! I may not be that pretty but my superpower is that I am super interested in (and have probably read about) just about anything, and if her talents lie in some area I don't know anything about I'm genuinely interest in learning more from her and it shows.
[–]theawesomeone 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sorry, I got to disagree with this one. It's nice to be able to banter, but catering the conversation to her interests doesn't necessarily get you anywhere. Actually, sometimes conversation isn't even necessary.
The fact that state of mind and outcome independence rules everything was confirmed to me when I went to Prague, where I escalated with someone who barely spoke English.
Once you know she's into you, it's on. Escalate, don't hesitate.
[–]hot4belgians 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No I don't disagree with you at all, I've hooked up with a french girl before and I don't speak much French. I guess it's part of the game that I enjoy, a good conversation rather than a crap one. I guess it's because I have the rule that I won't see anyone I don't find interesting.
There isn't a single correct approach, just the one you enjoy and feel comfortable with. Conversation's definitely not necessary to get into some girls' pants because how do the ed-hardy-wearing-fuckwads manage it?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's always good to know a little bit about a lot of things.
Doesn't help a lot professionally, for that you want to be a specialist IMO, but socially it's huge.
[–]thirdmanin 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Its great to expand your knowledge and be able to talk intelligently on a variety of subjects. I think the key is to "be in the moment" and really enjoy the conversation and see what you can learn and contribute to it to keep it exciting.
