hit the ground running, the more you think about an approach, the more anxiety gets a chance to build. Opening with "How are you guys doing?" is a standard for me, sometimes... like rarely, random sounds work to.

The purpose of the approach is for them to know that you exist, then stack forward.

Talk to everyone, don't focus on one person for a little while. Get over there, ask them how they know each other. Build rapport with the group as a whole. You have an entire evening to focus in on one person. If you're friends with the group you're in.
