Typically for as long as it takes them to look away. Then they'll look up and smile usually. When you do it enough times you'll get a gut feeling for the timing.

Until you open them in the next 3 seconds. Again, open them. If they break contact by looking down...it's a good signal, especially down and back up at you. Open, open, open.
