Moving to Tokyo, any tips?

I am gonna write you a huge post. Enjoy.. These are things that I have noticed myself through my life here and some come from research journals in speech communication.

Ok well you are gonna notice that there are two main types of japanese girls.. ones that speak english and ones that don't. Generally speaking, the ones that speak english are not as attractive physically but are more interesting. the ones that are out trying to pick up foreigners are not as attractive-they will look hot to you, and then go for it, but please keep in mind these are not the women valued by japanese culture. the ones that don't speak English, and are not really into foreigners tend to be more attractive and less accessible especially to foreigners.

to get these hot girls that don't speak english and arent interested in foreigners, you will need to speak japanese very well, and also your japanese has to sound like the way young people talk (if you are going for young people). There is a huge divide between what you learn in a textbook, and the way young people talk to their friends. Make friends with japanese to get an idea of what young people talk like.. and for god sake, make some friends with Japanese boys. if you are trying to pick up girls, you do not want to sound like one-if you only hang out with girls, you will end up talking like a girl.

About the way Japanese people communicate, they are generally very indirect and ambiguous. This is in direct contrast with the high level of uncertainty avoidance. Hofstede defines uncertainty avoidance as the following,

"Uncertainty Avoidance Index is the measure of a country’s ability to handle the unknown. “Unstructured situations are novel, unknown, surprising, different from usual. Uncertainty avoiding cultures try to minimize the possibility of such situations"

Now you ask yourself.. well how do they avoid situations that are novel, unknown, surprising or different than usual if everyone is communicating indirectly? Well, the short answer is that japanese people can almost read each other's minds. Anyone that has spent a long time in Japan will be able to know what Im talking about... its not exactly reading their mind, but they just know what the other person means through these indirect exchanges. If you want to be a successful PUA getting girls that are not interested in foreigners, you will need to MASTER this art and skill. The girls interested in foreigners will be very forgiving of you not knowing how to do this, since they recognize you are not japanese. The ones not interested in foreigners wont. Basically, you have to decide what kind of girl you are going after, and tailor your communication patterns (not your personality) to that. This is something which will take a LOT of work and will be extremely difficult, but if you pull it off, you will be really glad you did.

Picking up foreigners is fun too.. if you are from the us, and you see other americans you are interested in, proceed as you would in the united states.

If you want being a foreigner to be your advantage, roppongi is hands down the best place to be, there are many women there chasing foreigners.. but you will still need good game. Other fun areas are Shibuya-fashion / clubbing central of tokyo-full of young, beautiful women.., Zushi beach-being on the beach is always fun. Shimokitazawa-a place for young musicians and underground type folks. Shinjuku is ok, but has more of a salaryman vibe to it. Basically, you will want to explore as many areas as you can and find one that you like. I like shibuya the best but that is because it is where many live houses, clubs, bars are located. Shibuya is also good because logistics are much easier to work out. In the same area where most of the clubs are in shibuya, there are tons and tons of love hotels.. it makes logistics very easy.

meetup.com has some great clubs that you will definitely make friends in. find something that is similar to your interests and join.. you never know who you will meet there!

Opening people in cafes / izakayas can be really difficult. Japanese people make a high distinction between in-group and out-group people.. sitting down at a table with a buncha strangers could make them realllllly uncomfortable. If you are not gaming though, a lot of times salarymen will love it if a foreigner comes and sits and drinks with them. You will meet some really funny people this way.

As for openers, here are some that ive developed on my own.. One is simply saying 'hello'. If she is interested in foreigners, its really easy.

Another one involves you and a group of tourists.. these tourists dont read kanji, so you ask the adjacent table or group full of hb how to write the kanji for 食べ放題　or 飲み放題. The time that they are writing it down, you explain how you just met those tourists and are trying to help them have a good time.

another one is making friends with a group of foreigners-especially girls. then going up to a group japanese HB and tell them that your friends want to meet some japanese people. if you can translate for the group it will be a huge DHV, and being with white, western women will also be your pre-selection.

remember, in tokyo, being white or a foreigner is still fairly different.. but its not exactly a different thing in tokyo. you will stand out, but most people in tokyo except the elderly have seen many foreigners in their life and it doesnt really phase them.

lastly, you and me oughta go on a sarge together. You will have a blast, no doubt.

Yes, go to the Gaspanic club, in Roppongi. Use good club game: show some confidence, be a decent dancer, and most of all: be white. You can't fail trust me ;-).

By the way, how do Japanese girls like facial hair? My beard looks like this (Joe Kucan, Kane from C&C). But I was browsing some Japanese dating site and noticed that some girls explicitly mentioned that they wanted a clean shaven face. Is the clean shaven preferred in Japan?

Of course I think I'll try first with the beard like I've always done but I could go and shave it some day.

Never forget about the white girls. They are always pushed to the side and forgotten. Show them some attention and you will have them hooked. Japanese guys rarely go for foreign girls, and foreign guys are always looking for Asian girls, leaving the white girls out in the cold.
