if you're concerned about awkward silence i would recommend a strategy from " how to hold a conversation like a man "

sparks talks about " shaming " a girl into speaking, although im not 100% sure how well this works in an opening conversation ( because you are expected to have a reason for approaching them )

essentially sparks is saying ( although i highly recommend the video ) that you as a man, shouldnt be trying to do the 'feminine' part of the conversation by holding it up. you should be engaged in the conversation, but it is the women's job to make conversation, and you should reinforce this by holding out the awkward silence, or lull, in conversation by maintaining eye contact and giving them a look of "well??" ( although more subtle than TWO question marks ), essentially expecting them to continue the conversation

like i said though, this works better on dates or when you are already established with a woman, or rather not expected to carry the conversation or have a reason for initiating conversation
