Whatever your feel most comfortable with. 'Excuse me' is fine if that works for you, same as 'hey' or any other opening word. I wouldn't stress too much about that right now. When you approached 1000 women with different openers you can gauge which opener would work best. For now, don't bother changing up what you feel works.

I think people put way too much emphasis on specific phrases or approaches. The biggest issue dudes need to overcome is the ability to approach in the first place.

"Excuse me" is also my way of starting a conversation, actually I use "excuse me" when the girl is not looking at me and I use these words to make her look at me.

It is perfectly fine, it is an excuse that you stopped them. in some cases is longer: "excuse me, two seconds... sorry for interrupting you .... bla bla bla bla " I saw some PUAs on youtube saying that you don't have to excuse yourself if you want to talk to them, but actually it's BS like 90% of the advice on youtube, it's a polite way to start a conversation.

By the way, asking for directions is .... an old way to start a conversation, but you can also ask for a place to eat, and now you can insert your own preference, so it looks like this: "Excuse me, do you know where I can get Chinese / Italian / Turkish food?" So you use a twist because even if you're standing in front of a restaurant and you ask that question to a girl, you can say "they don't have Chinese food" - it's that simple and creates a wide topic of discussion.
