If you are on a first date you have to go from the small talk questions and get to interesting conversations as quickly as possible. There isn’t any avoiding it, but you can find quicker lines to the conversation. Think of it like playing worldle you start with you go to and adapt based on context.

Find stuff to talk about. Make jokes. Tell stories. Girls (and me personally) don’t want to talk about the same stuff over and over again every date. What’s your job, how long have you lived here yada yada. I try to avoid all that stuff on the first dates. Many women have told me it’s been refreshing.
