There was a Russell Crowe film called "A Beautiful Mind". There is a scene in that movie where, in a bar with a group of friends, he instantly works out how to increase the entire groups odds of hooking up with a group of women who walk in, using a unique approach that basically goes like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CemLiSI5ox8
There are an evenly matched group of guys and girls, one of whom is way hotter than the other.
If the guys do the natural thing and go for the one they like, they will probably all go for the hot one. This will have the effect of all the guys efforts cancelling each other out as well as annoying the remaining girls, who will then play cock block roles at worst, or leaving only one of the guys with any shot at getting laid by the hottie because the rest will all feel like second choices and make it harder to score with.
So, his approach is to IGNORE the hottest one, and have all the guys each pick another girl. The idea is that the other girls will love that they were picked over the hottie. Although not in the scene itself, I also have observed that the hottie is usually a bit shaken by not being picked and acts more aggressively towards HER shot to regain her confidence, making her easier to win.
It all seemed like movie theory until my group of guy friends and I tried it not once, but twice and found that indeed, this shit does work. There are probably other factors like seducing the one who would cock block the others. In the first instance I was fortunate enough to be the hottie's choice and yes, she seemed confused after the initial approach group to group when we fixated on the others. Additionally, as a group we all did better than usual. We are a group of 5. Rarely do we all get lucky..most of the time it's 2 out of 5 and sometimes not at all. When we tried the A Beautiful Mind approach we got 4 out of 5 the first time and 3 the second time, although there were extenuating circumstances (a case of too-drunk and a case of one of them being married). Still, our batting average was higher than with the all-for-the-hottie approach.
