Recently, I met a girl who I thought was absolutely amazing. We met a few times and I thought we really hit it off. Unfortunately, she slowly stopped replying to my messages. I've moved on, but I want to share something valuable I learned from the experience.
Like many people on this sub, I try to follow the principles from Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends And Influence People (HTWFAIP) rather religiously. There are over 30 key ideas in the book, however to sum up I would say it is this:
Be Interested.
That's it. That's the crux of HTWFAIP. Most of the chapters in the book take you from a self centered narcissist to somebody who can talk with people about their lives.
Heres the thing. This books works great in a BUSINESS context. If I'm a sales person, my job is to learn more about the customer, show interest in their problems and then provide my services as the solution. Anyone looking to advance their interpersonal skills career-wise would be a fool to not read Dale Carnegie.
What happens, if like me, you take Carnegie too far? Especially in a relationship context? You end up being interested, however you never become interesting.
Interested and Interesting must go hand in hand.
Every time I talked to this girl, our conversations became a non-stop barrage of "Open Ended" questions. I was literally interrogating her over coffee. It is a great quality to show interest in another person's life, passions, hobbies, stories, however a conversation needs to be give and take to create a real relationship.
I know that personally, I've taken HTWFAIP way too far over the years. I've gotten to a point now where I'm almost nauseated by the idea of talking about myself.
I don't know why I don't talk about myself. I'm a very amazing person. I've got a great job in accounting. I'm a hobbyist programmer who's created several software solutions for my employer. I'm passionate about a wide range of subjects from foreign policy to US history and economics.
I know I'm an interesting person because I took the time to become interesting.
If you are reading this, it means you're like me. You're a person who is not only eager to learn, you're also a person who takes control of their destiny.
You are an interesting person. Never shy away from talking about yourself. If she doesn't care about what you have to say, it's her loss.
