I'm about to make a big move to a city I've never lived in before, with very few people I know.

It's been over 10 years since I've moved cities, but I know that it's pure gold for meeting people to be "new here" even with the lower social proof that comes from not knowing anybody.

Here's my plan of attack for the new city. Please share your tips & tricks that you use when you are new to a city!

  • reconnect with the few people I know there, get their tips on places to live / go out / etc.
  • find a nice pad that's central to work and a good social scene
  • continuously ask for advice on the street, for restaurants, bars, etc. Parlay those intros into longer conversations.
  • find a good local bar or two, get to know the bartenders really well, get them to introduce me to people and other cool places. Build up good rapport with the regulars.
  • scope out bars that have a big outdoor area with shared picnic table-type seating (that's kind of "my scene" and I find it optimal for meeting people)
  • hook up with a band, do some local gigs.
  • check out social sports leagues, these aren't usually my scene but may be a good idea to meet new people.
  • do a lot of "meet and greet" lunches with local business folk in my industry. I don't frequently become great friends with people in business, but the ones I have met this way ended up being very good friends.
  • find some local professional groups for my industry.
  • check out local events / organizations that seem like a good place to meet people. I had decent luck with attending some local Yelp events in the past.

Any other tips/ideas much appreciated.
