Being nice is very good as long as you're not a doormat or devaluing yourself by being unreasonably kind. Be normally kind. Not over the top - like giving people the royal treatment for no reason.

Shitting on other people is not nice - so maybe you shouldn't do that. Even if what you said is true it's a bad look to talk badly about others behind their back. It reflects badly on you.

She agreed to a coffee date, so i assume there's some interest from her end if you actually used the word "date" and that she doesn't assume it's just a friendly hangout. But try to avoid talking about your friends or past acquaintances because such friend talk gets you deeper in the friendzone

Yeah, you tried to seek her approval, trying to position yourself as better than him, and that has the opposite effect because women don’t feel attracted to guys who seek approval or validation.

You tried to be different and ironically if a girl says she dated a “bad guy” the most probable thing is that she will continue to date more “bad guys” like that.. It would have been better to defend the guy, and side with him to show that you are not there to seek her approval.

The fact that she even brings it up and starts talking badly about him could probably hint that she isn’t over him.

And if she is talking to you about other guys, it usually means she is starting tod we you as a guy to confide on, which is a typical sign you are entering the friendzone.

I think your “date” is not a date for her, it’s more like a hangout. Because nothing there suggests that you actually hotter in her, sounds like you approach her in a friendly manner and as such she got friend vibes with you and nothing more than that.

the opposite of a classic nice guy isn't being a creep. what her ex was doing in high-school was very creepy, it's not wrong to think so or say so.

it's ok to be nice as long as you don't sacrifice dignity. if someone asks you to do something and you don't want to, it's ok to say no. saying no doesn't make you not nice.

it's also ok to not say everything you think. maybe you think she looks good in that dress or haircut but if you feel or think it's not the time for that compliment, it's ok to not say it. this also doesn't make you not nice.

if someone starts badgering you, it's ok to hold your ground and fight for what you believe. if you feel or think that fighting doesn't accomplish anything, it's ok to exit the discussion. this doesn't make you not nice.

it's also ok to take time to think before you answer someone. it's very good to be able to explain why it took so long to answer, in case anyone asks.
